There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling den wagering is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is real of most border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat casino, features 150 slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that highlights many comforts on top of the gambling den, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
