There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is not legal. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; although, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are supposedly needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is real of many border crossings.

The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel complex that features many amenities in addition to the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 tables.
