There is a captivating history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are supposedly necessary to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, contains 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga river boat is open all hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
